Federal Government Renews Local Journalism Initiative (LJI)
March 1, 2024

Ottawa, ON –

Today, Tim Louis, Member of Parliament for Kitchener-Conestoga, is proud to announce that our government will renew its commitment to the Local Journalism Initiative. Since its inception, the Local Journalism Initiative has emerged as a fundamental pillar in supporting and promoting strong, independent local journalism. It serves as a crucial engine for the development of journalism that meets the diverse needs of rural and underrepresented communities across Canada.

Please see here the official announcement by the Honourable Pascale St-Onge, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

As a proud member of the Rural Caucus, MP Tim Louis has played a key role in efforts to ensure that this initiative remains a powerful tool for enabling small communities to access quality information.

The Local Journalism Initiative provides funding to eligible Canadian media organizations. These resources are intended to facilitate the hiring of journalists, thereby enabling the creation of journalistic content specifically tailored to rural communities. This renewal of the Local Journalism Initiative aligns with the government's overarching vision to promote equitable access to quality information.

Quotes

“Local journalism, especially in small communities, is essential for fostering strong, independent reporting that addresses our diverse needs. The Local Journalism Initiative’s support will help our local reporters tell our stories. It is more important than ever for communities to have access to quality information, enabling them to stay informed about local events and stories that might otherwise go unreported. I will always support the vital role of local journalism in keeping communities connected and informed.”
